Lectures

Week 1- 06.01.2020
Lecture 1 : Introduction to the module

In this module, we were given an opportunity to visit Tokyo, Japan for 6 days to study its culture and create an outcome of any sort based on our findings that interprets the given theme, 'Japanese Mythology'.

To prepare ourselves before going to Toky0, we had to do thorough research of what we might encounter and what to expect from the culture there. Along with 5 preliminary ideas. All compiled into a proposal that we had to present in class.

Week 2- 13.01.2020
Lecture 2 : Culture

This week, the lecturer explained us about what cultures are all about. It refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, concepts of the universe and material objects, and possessions acquired by a group of people.

Layers of culture:
  • The national level
  • The regional level
  • The generation level
  • The social class level
  • The cooperate level
And also, Ms. Jinchi briefed us the significance of this study. It's in line with UNESCO intercultural eduction. This learning is to know, to do and to live together.

Project 1 : Proposal

Week 1- 06.01.2020
Proposal : Japanese Mythology

We formed a group of 4 : Lee Rong Sheng, Christine Cheah En Jou, Yap Wei XuanWong Zhen Gie (Archi student).

Mr Charles and Ms Anis approved on the topic we have chosen - The famous 7 lucky Gods of Japan. We happened to look into what the number '7' intended to mean and why there are just 7 Gods. The lecturers want us to ultilise our research basis as catalyst; it is also possible to relate to Hero Archetypes, animations and more.

Week 2- 13.01.2020

After sometimes making sure what we are actually doing, we finally have the direction to start working on properly. Mr Charles questioned us several crucial questions, and only our group realised we are not there in Tokyo, Japan to find out answers which somebody already provided information on; instead we are there to explore, observe and investigate. The '7 Lucky Gods' is just the typical Mythology study which set the start for us, while the topic that is to be figured out by us is the number '7'.

Week 3- 20.01.2020

Questions to us:
1) Is it true that Japan has the strongest influences by the number '7'?
2) Why is the number '7' influencial in the Japanese culture & lifestyle? (to discover the influences = research objectives)
3) Can the influences/ applications related to the symbolic number '7' easily be noticed in the modern Japan? If so, where can you see them? If no, why is it so hard to see them in modern days when it is sacred and important to their culture?

Recommendation for our group members includes: hold a short (1-3mins) interview session with people in Japan to ask about whether the number '7' is something they're familiar with; looking into the festival, exhibition, shops/ buildings, food, street views, advertisment design, whether anything that is possibly. We are also reminded that there is definitely limitations to our research, for examples on language, on willingness of people being interviewed and the chance of meeting people who really could give some useful and information straight to the point; and time.

To conclude, our problem statement should talk about whether number '7' will still remain in the society, and basically to tell our group's purpose of going to Tokyo. We also have to keep in mind that, only after the trip to Tokyo, we can finalise our official topic and idea for the final design.

Week 5- 3.02.2020

Mr Charles said our proposal are pretty well-prepared and we are ready to for the Tokyo trip. But most importantly, please search up for the way to politely approach Japanese people when we are to request them for interview/ survey response purpose.

Project 2: Data Collection (Field trip to Tokyo, Japan)

Reflection

From Feb 3 to 9, our group visited Tokyo, Japan for a module called ‘Intercultural design’, which takes the form of a study tour designed to allow us to experience different cultures and explore our research topic.

This study tour was a chance for us to be more critical. This trip was full of insightful and informative international experiences, yet exhilarating moment. We had a university visit at Tokyo University of Technology (TUT), art museums for explore their contemporary art, street and city exploration.

We had abundant opportunities to hear many different voices and their point of views about our research question during our study tour. Besides, we experienced so many local culture like take part in the most quintessentially Japanese ritual, the tea ceremony and of course their various of delicious local dishes. We were required to engage to people with mindfulness regarding these international experiences and also be critical on our experiences with different perspectives. It was definitely an intellectually demanding task during the trip.

Week 7- 17.02.2020 (Presentation day)
After listening to our group's presentation for data collection in Japan, Mr Asrizal had no comment and is satisfied with it; on the other hand for our supervisor - Mr Charles, he mentioned about the preliminary idea of us, where he thinks that it would be better for us to not compare or show both of the cultures/ beliefs and identities of Japan and Malaysia, but to only focus on our Malaysia, find out one identity that all Malaysians agree on and accept.

Week 7- 19.02.2020 (Consultation)

We had a short consultation with Mr Charles, discussing about our preliminary idea.

Execution

We decided to go for Decoder design (Red & Blue), with our concept focuses on 'Malaysian culture identity'. Our final will be a series of postcards, accompany with individual design of packaging.
Our tasks:
Sketching part: Zhen
Graphics: Wei Xuan
Postcard design: Christine
Packaging design & Printing: Desmond
