Week 11 | November 4th, 2019

Proposal- Chinese calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy inspired Typography.

Problem
The lack of cultural knowledge of our origin and background by the younger generation and the artistry of Chinese calligraphy is going to extinct.

Solution
To intertwine culture and modernism within a typeface - inspired by different type of scripts of Chinese calligraphy. Creating a typeface that embodies both modern applications and traditional culture while maintaining the characteristics and personality from the scripts of Chinese calligraphy.

Application
To put it in Chinese restaurant signage/ poster/ leaflets.

Inspirations

Week 11
After I done my research on different scripts of Chinese calligraphy, I decided to start with writing it down with my brush and Chinese calligraphy paper called "xuan zhi".

After few attempts of sketching, Mr. Vinod finally approved it with my ideas after i showed him the sketches. He asked me to explore more possibilities and do more findings.

Week 12
After a week of exploration about Chinese calligraphy, I came out with more designs and shown to Mr. Vinod, Mr. Shamsul. They said Fig 4.16 and Fig 4.12 both could work, and they ask me to choose between these 2. Mr. Vinod suggested me to do Fig 4.12 instead of Fig 4.16 because Fig 4.16's design is very common and can be seen in current typeface design.

So I started to digitalise my Fig 4.12's typeface design to Adobe Illustrator.

Week 12
Online feedback from Mr. Vinod : Refine and simplify. Some of the strokes are overly complicated (3, K) ... others the counter spaces have varying space, the proximity of one stroke in one letter is different with another. You need to refine these to achieve a similar visual appeal.

I started my refine process again.

Online feedback from Mr. Vinod : Those circular punctuations need loose the hole OR need to be bigger so that the hole is visible when reduced.

My typeface still need to be refined and some of the letters are not easy to read like B, P ,T ,Y. So I started with refine process again.

After finalising the design. I moved it to Fontlab to generate the typeface.

Feedback

Week 11
November 4th, 2019

I told my idea to Mr.Vinod about my idea, it was about different scripts of Chinese calligraphies merge with roman letters and try to create something special cause the Chinese calligraphy is getting less known by younger generation. I want to bring this awareness to the younger generation of old scripts of Chinese calligraphy by creating this typeface even though Mr. Vinod already told that this topic been done too many times by seniors.

After few attempts of sketching, Mr. Vinod finally approved it with my ideas after i showed him the sketches. He asked me to explore more possibilities.

Week 12
November 11st, 2019

I showed more sketches to Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul, they selected 2 of my design. They asked me to choose one and proceed with digitalise it.

First attempt of digitalising it.
Online feedback from Mr. Vinod : Refine and simplify. Some of the strokes are overly complicated (3, K) ... others the counter spaces have varying space, the proximity of one stroke in one letter is different with another. You need to refine these to achieve a similar visual appeal.

Week 13
November 19th, 2019

My typefont still need to be refined and some of the letters are not easy to read. And the applications should focus more on the typeface itself than the design. The font for applications should stay in one colour, it makes the letters stand out.

Reflection

Experiences

Week 11
November 4th, 2019

It was so interesting to explore my root Chinese cultures and found my passion back to Chinese calligraphy. I decide to design a font that related to chinese calligraphy and i gonna write it by myself

Week 12
November 11st, 2019

During the process of design letters, it makes me so calm while writing down the letters. One of the best meditation.

Week 13
November 18th, 2019

It was so fun seeing your own designed font to become typeable. Fontlab is quite hard to use but glad I managed to finish it.

Observations

Week 11
November 4th, 2019

Everyone got their ideas and started to doing it got me so stress.

Week 12
November 11st, 2019

Im so sleepy and can't focus on my work so here I'm, updating my blog. All of the classmates have started digitalise their design.

Week 13
November 18th, 2019

Classmates are busying updating blogs and Im doing it too.

Further Reading

TypeX: Typography: A Teaching Experience by Hernan Ordonez

This book was not giving out written theories but showing a compilation of some many works carried out by students under the author's supervision in Iran. I read the chapter "Type Family". This chapter presents how the students consider a series of premises, taking account not only to signs that identify product as being part of the family, but also the function for which the product was conceived.

One of the students created a type family for young Moroccans living in the Raval district of Barcelona. This writing proposal uses Islamic Calligraphy adapted to the context for which it was designed and presents no difficulties to be read by Western cultures, and to which it was directed.

This book was both a joy to read and quite enlightening. Not only was the writing engaging, but it did a wonderful job integrating the story of these various symbols into the context of the wider world of human affairs. While certainly intended for a popular audience, Hernan took his task very seriously, drawing upon an enormous range of sources to tell the story of these symbols to the tune of ~67 pages of references.
