Exercise 1: Typographic Systems *Absent*
Week 1 | Briefed on 26th August 2019
From I've seen from my course-mate's e-portfolio, our first individual exercise to produce/explore these 8 Typographic Systems using the specific content stated in the MIB; within the 200 mm x 200 mm size using Adobe InDesign. We will be producing 2 for each Typographic System, hence a total of 16 artworks. Taking note that we are only allowed 9 typefaces that was shared in the previous semester. Also, we are required to use very minimal non-objective elements and only one colour which excludes black, white or grey.
The 8 systems mentioned above are to be explored using the following content:
All ripped up: Punk Influences on Design
or
The ABCs of: The Bauhaus and Design Theory
Open Public Lectures:
November 24, 2019 Lew Pik Svonn, 9AM-10AM Ezrena Mohd, 10AM-11AM Suzy Sulaiman, 11AM-12PM
November 25, 2019 Muthu Neduraman, 9AM-10AM Fahmi Reza, 10AM-11AM Fahmi Fadzil, 11AM-12PM
Lecture Theatre 12
I started off with rough sketches for each system shown below, then I pick the more promising one to try to edit it on Indesign and make variations from there.
Version 1 : First attempt
Final version
Man-made objects (chair, glass, etc.), structures (buildings), and nature (Human, landscape, leaf, plant, bush, clouds, hill, river, etc).
We will then have to analyze and dissect the composition to find type within that image. While letterforms have been identified, we were to digitize and refine the letters into a readable typeface of its distinctive characters.

Week 3
September 9th, 2019
General Feedback:
1.) Mr. Vinod advised me to be carefully play with the highlight of sentences/ words.
2.) The layout for guides usually with 7 x 8.
3.) Non-objective item should only garnish and be placed properly, he advised me to focus more on the systems.
4.) He also re-explained about the modular system. Make a grid system so I can take care of the alignment problem and not crossing other column. Can use as many columns as you want for each category, every category shouldn't be exceeded to other column.
Specific Feedback:
1.) Axial system: It's fine, non-objective items should be removed.
2.) Radial system: The highlight of the sentences and the play of colours should be taking care of.
3.) Dilatational system: It's fine, make the non-objective items slightly smaller.
4.) Transitional system: Remove all the non-objective items.
5.) Bilateral system: Same issues. Remove all the non-objective items.
6.) Modular system: Everything should stick to own column ( the columns can be as much as you want ). Do not exceed other column.
7.) Random system: It's fine. No comment.
Week 4 *Public holiday*
September 16th, 2019
Mr.Vinod said that my letter refinement was interesting and he advised me try to increase the weight without loosing the contrast. For my exercise 3, I provided 2 different style of poster design to Mr. Vinod and he chose the second one without any amendment.
Week 5
September 23rd, 2019
Mr. Vinod mentioned that once we start refining our letters from the ones we have extracted, dont refine it too much away from your first ectraction. We need to find a core characteristic from it. The process of refinement only allow us adding or subtracting elements we want and to inject them in all the other letters.
Specific feedback: Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul suggested me to remain the letters to its original forms without any refinement. Due to the original characteristics from extracted letters have very strong characteristics, just refine since I've done the exercise. For my type and play (Part 1) exercise is all good. Just remove the non-objective shape and focus on play of typography.

Skipped 2 weeks of classes because of my study plan issues. I’ve to catch up few exercises to keep myself on track even though it was my first class. Coming into class on a public holiday was an interesting experience. Lack of students in the class was nice, much easier for me to seeking help from lecturers and classmates. Most of the classmates are friendly and really willing to help while i had problems with the previous exercises that I’ve missed.
Week 4 *Public holiday*
September 16th, 2019
After skipped of 3 lessons. There are so much exercises for me to keep myself on track.
It's quite challenging for me cause I have to finish 2 exercises at the same time. After few days of sleepless night,I finished it.
Week 5
September 23rd, 2019
Have to get myself motivated and focus on class. Even thought I've done all exercise on time but there's still many improvements have to be done other than my works like time management skill.

It was interesting to see others works like their compositions for the grid system. As when I was trying to digitalise my works, I found modular and radial were the hardest for me. Was quite panicking about my exercises and everyone was so focusing on their exercise 2.

All of my classmates are busying and focusing for amend their artworks, luckily most of my artworks have been approved and don't have to amend much on class.

Lecture 1: Introduction to Advanced Typography and Typographic Systems
26/08/2019 (Week 1) *ABSENT*
From I've seen from my course-mate's e-portfolio, we began our second semester with a brief introduction module and what we would be doing throughout the course. We were then placed into groups to present about typographic systems, we were also given an hour and a half to prepare.
After the presentations, Mr Vinod showed us some of our senior's final work results. Here is a compilation of the 8 typographic systems (Axial, Radial, Dilatational, Random, Grid, Modular, Transitional and Bilateral:

Exercise 2 : Type and Play (Part 1)- Finding Type *Absent*
Week 2 | Briefed on 2nd September 2019
From I've seen from my course-mate's e-portfolio, the instructions for the first part of our next exercise begins right after the feedback session in class, and that is Type and Play. We will have to select an image of our choice between:
Man-made objects (chair, glass, etc.), structures (buildings), and nature (Human, landscape, leaf, plant, bush, clouds, hill, river, etc).
We will then have to analyze and dissect the composition to find type within that image. While letterforms have been identified, we were to digitize and refine the letters into a readable typeface of its distinctive characters.
Steps:
1) Identify anything/ Find a picture to work with
2) Go through trial and error with the extraction
3) Dissections with minimum 5 alphabets
4) Refine and refine
Week 3 | Briefed on 9th September 2019 (Public holiday)
My first lesson of Advanced Typography.
1) Identify anything/ Find a picture to work with

Fig 2.2 : Tracing and extracting random letters from the image.
Fig 2.3 : Extracted letters. "V, T, H, A , F"
Fig 2.3 : Refine the letters. "V, T, H, A , F"
After extracted and refined the letters, Mr. Vinod asked us to refer to a typeface to work with. I have chosen font :Papyrus regular because it shared the same characteristics with my extracted letters.
Then I started to dissect my letters and make it more readable without changing their original shape too much. My first attempt is to make them look like alphabets.
Fig 2.5: Dissect letters
Fig 2.6 : Refine the letters according to the typeface Ive chosen.
Fig 2.7 : Before and after the refining process.
Mr. Vinod suggested me to increase the font weight without losing any contrast.
Fig 2.8 : After increased the thickness of the letters. Final version.
Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul also suggested that the original extracted letters have strong characteristics of its own. They asked me to do one more exercise for trying to refine the original version again.
Fig 2.9 : T, H, A remain its own shape. Here are the process for letter V and F refinement. Final outcome.

Exercise 3 : Type and Play (Part 2)
Week 3 | Briefed on 9th September 2019
In this second part of Type & Play exercise, we were asked to find a stock image and interplay type with it. The text chosen must be woven into a symbiotic relationship with the image. The sentence should be 3-5 words long.
